Retinal pigment degeneration, also called retinitis pigmentosa (RP), is an inherited, degenerative eye disease that causes severe vision impairment due to the progressive degeneration of the rod photoreceptor cells in the retina. The initial retinal degenerative symptoms of RP are characterized by decreased night vision (nyctalopia) and the loss of the mid-peripheral visual field.
