Background
CXCL16 is a transmembrane protein whose extracellular domain can be cleaved by proteases and released into a soluble form. It is expressed in a variety of cell types, including endothelial cells, smooth muscle cells, macrophages, and lymphocytes. CXCL16 has multiple functions, including as a chemokine to attract immune cells to the site of inflammation, and as a scavenger receptor involved in lipid metabolism and the development of atherosclerosis. CXCL16 is upreregulated in a variety of inflammatory diseases, such as psoriasis, rheumatoid arthritis, and inflammatory bowel disease, and in a variety of cancers, such as lung, breast, and gastric cancers.
